Holy Saturday (31st March)

One of the hidden gems of Christian worship is the Vigil Service held on the Saturday evening before Easter Day. Beginning with the lighting of the Easter fire, the new Paschal Candle (ours stand three feet tall!) is carried into a darkened church and the first part of the service is conducted in candlelight as a number of readings from the Old Testament – interspersed with silence – give us pause to reflect upon God’s love revealed throughout history and our need of his decisive act in sending his Son to redeem us. Then, with a flourish of noise and light, we proclaim that Christ is risen, and celebrate the breaking forth of new light into the world. It is a powerful and moving service – why not try and attend this act of worship this year? We start outside the Church doors at 8.30pm.
